The origins of the brand were derived from a beautiful old vintage dictionary created in 1931 to standardise colour. (A bit like a latter-day Pantone colour-system but much simpler). Strips of ribbon were dyed and bound into fabric covered fold-out books and given evocative names such as Beryl Green and Medici Crimson & then used to colour-match products by eye; from post boxes to battleships, office upholstery to uniforms the people behind it were determined to find a universal colour standard long before the days if digitatisation.
